Why did you pick this product vs others?:Nutritionally this is ideal for your hamster when paired with Mazuri rta and mouse lab blocks. Also the hammies love it! I’ve been purchaisng this for years and will always recomend it. Just make sure that they are eating the little green bits too for a well rounded diet!

Summary opinion: GREAT FOOD.Details to back up my rating (4 out of 5). This food for hamsters and gerbils is fed by me to both kinds of pets. I’ve been keeping these critters for a period of 3 months (but I learn very quickly in nearly everything I set out to do). The obvious food to begin with was the ubiquitous (easy to find) K-yT-e brand. Let’s be straightforward: this Higgins food beats Ka-Te- into the dust. My pets are enthusiastic about the change. I would eat (some of) this myself.I got the shipment purchased here at amazon and opened the bag. The ratio of ingredients that the food has in common with a comparable Kay-ee blend is such that the more desirable (premium?) ingredients are much more plentiful. And nearly everything is B I G G E R. Nuts and seeds found in both brands are just cleaner, bigger, better in this Higgins product. And there is a much greater variety of things in the Higgin Sunburst. There are freeze-dried slices of various vegetables & so forth that again show that Higgins is just thinking better, trying harder, cares more.One component in common is the tubular fragments (extruded, like, err umm, fecal matter is extruded biologically ..) that are, I assume (withoiut professional knowledge) alfafa and / or timothy pellets. Yo. ** my pets no like these, no no no no **. Neither the gerbils nor the hamsters care for these at all. Now, maybe they theoretically add up to a better nutritional balance, but we can clearly separate theory from reality in this case, ’cause if the pets won’t eat them, they aren’t affecting a better nutritional balance, YO. :-)I gave the purchase 4 stars because I’d like to see Higgins package a smaller unit (my bag is said to be 2.3 pounds shipping weight). I’d like to see a 1 lb. bag made available. I’d rather buy more often and feed my pets more recently opened food, than buy in large excess bulk. Just odd that way i suppose. [ and by the way, i do keep the food carefully stored in airtight clean containers ]I ought to just stop, but seldom have I been so enthusiastic about a purchase. THIS STUFF IS GREAT. Seems to be higher quality than the others I’ve tried
Decided to try this brand and blend out. I had bugs get into the 3 other bags of food I had been giving them. This stuff looks much higher quality than the name brand stuff I was getting at the local pet stores. The gerbils who are a bit anti social with everybody with me, even then they are a little standoffish. But now when I open the cage for feeding they are all over my hand, letting me pick them up and pet them. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but they seem much more excited to have human interaction after the food change lol.

My Syrian and Dwarf love this! The variety is great, I am going to find something more nutritionally balanced for my dwarf though as this mix is better for Syrians.

My mini hamsters seem to like it but not as much as the very much cheaper ‘Supreme Tiny Friends Farm Harry Hamster’. Only from USA, horrendous P&P.If you have a knuckle-biting Dwarf like a ‘Robo’, I would recommend Witte Molen Puur Dwarf Hamsters & Mice as a much better alternative. My hamsters are ‘Midi’ size, not true Dwarfs.

I’ve owned hamsters for a number of years and this is the best food on the market right now for nutrition content. I add mazuri rat and mouse pellets (50/50) as seed mixes by them self don’t have enough protein. My hamsters also love this stuff!

This brand was recommended, so I decided to give it a try. What I can say is that my hamster was not impressed, he eats just as he ate from other brands, but he still prefers fresh vegetables and protein. However, I think this food mix is healthier and has a better seed variety when compared to other brands.
