Great for Bettas
The Hygger sponge filters are great. I have two of them for my Bettas. I do think water is cleaner with a 3-media filter but this works better for my Bettas.

New favorite sponge filter style
What a delightful little sponge filter! It may not be as compact as my other 10gal-size filter, but I like the upward-facing inlet, so that I can pull the sponge off for super easy cleaning without detaching the whole unit every time, I like the adjustable length uplift tube, and I like the angled outlet. The foam cell density is nice and close, and the plastics don’t feel as thin and fragile as a lot of other filter units at its price point. I’ve got a few hygger-branded tank accessories at this point and I’m definitely starting to trust their manufacturing quality/selection criteria….I actually didn’t even end up using it in my sponge-filter-based tank, I’m buying a second one for that. Turns out, some of the parts combine perfectly with the filter inlet for my cannister filter in my main tank, so I’m using it as an upgraded shrimp-safe prefilter screen. I got frustrated with my last prefilter since the foam wasn’t as dense as this and it was downward-facing, so this checks multiple boxes even outside of its intended use-case!

Good filter bad suction cups
filter works well, doesn’t take up much room when folded vertically have one in a 10-gallon shrimp tank and a second one on a 5-gallon shrimp tank, the adjustable outlet is a nice feature depending on where you want the flow to come out at and what direction only problem i have is that it’s not weighted enough and wants to float so every week or two they will pull the suction cups off the glass I’ve scraped the glass cleaned the suction cups thinking that was the issue but the suction cups just don’t hold very well to fix this problem i ended up taking some old plant weights and wrapped them around the bottom inlet by the elbow close to the sponge to help keep it down.

Best small sponge filter
Downsized from 29 to 20h tank. The medium dual sponge I was using on the larger tank takes up too much room and this is the perfect size. Running with undergravel filter and since I like to use carbon to keep the water clear, I’m going to add the biological media holder from the med size dual sponge to put carbon in. Also using a high power air pump so it’s pulling the water through the sponge. Shrimp and dwarf gourmia love to eat the detrius it collects. Highly recommend. I adjusted the output tube so it’s half out of the water. No splashes and keeps the surface moving.

Works great
I was originally using the filter that came with my 5 gallon aquarium but I hated how the flow of it whipped my betta around when he swam near it and having to replace the filters regularly since they fell apart easily. I tried using a sponge filter in that to reduce waste and the flow rate but a biofilm formed at the water surface from lack of flow from the filter. I read online how these type of sponge filters are ideal specially for bettas so I bought this filter along with the Hygger air pump. It was easy to set up and while it takes up some room in the tank it works SO much better than the original tank filter. It’s fairly quiet, the flow is gentle and doesn’t whip my betta around, the water is crystal clear and no biofilm on the surface. I just rinse the sponge in old aquarium water after siphoning every month or so after 6 months it’s still in great shape. I like that it came with a replacement sponge but I have a feeling it’ll be a while before I have to replace it.

Good but incomplete
I would say overall this is a decent filter. Let’s see how it lasts. I am only giving it an ok rating however because they didn’t include any tubing. Kind of cheap of them for such an expensive device.

Great
Great filter 5.5 gallon tank perfect size and better than the one they have using a pump in the tank.

Very easy to setup and it does not create ripples on the surface if you face the nozzle on the glass side. My floaters are thriving. Keeps the water absolutely clear.
