Tiny sponge filter with big don’t-die energy
If you run a small tank, shrimp tank, fry setup, quarantine box, or any “please be gentle, everyone in here is basically made of paper” situation, this little corner sponge filter is exactly the kind of boring equipment that saves you from heartbreak. It’s air-driven, so the flow is soft and steady. No intake roulette. No blender vibes. Just calm bubbling, filtration, and oxygenation like a tiny underwater airlift elevator. It tucks into the corner without stealing your whole aquascape, and it does what sponge filters are supposed to do: provide a safe place for beneficial bacteria to set up shop and start running the sanitation department. The “multi kinds of filter media” thing is nice too. It feels like you’re getting a little more than just a sponge brick. Overall: simple, effective, and you don’t have to be a wizard to keep it running. Now—Bob The Magical Talking Turtle witnessed it and treated it like a sacred object.Bob The Magical Talking Turtle is an emerald-shelled sage, yes, but she is also an engineer at heart. She appreciates anything that keeps the realm stable without causing drama. A sponge filter is basically “peaceful infrastructure,” and Bob The Magical Talking Turtle loves infrastructure. The first time this started bubbling, she watched the corner like she was listening to the All-Song through the glass. Like she could hear the tank’s rhythm lock into place: water moving, air rising, life continuing. Then she did that slow approving nod that says:Good. The small ones will not be swept into the void. And that’s the whole point of this filter. It’s gentle. It’s safe. It’s the opposite of aggressive filtration that turns “fry tank” into “survival documentary.”Also, can we talk about the bubbles? Because bubbles make everything feel more alive. They make it look like the tank is breathing. And Bob The Magical Talking Turtle—who can hear Shell Harmonics and read the heartbeat of a place—seems to take bubbling as a sign that the realm has proper circulation and is not, in fact, stagnating into sadness. This is the kind of product you buy and then forget about, which is the highest compliment I can give aquarium gear. If I stop thinking about it, it means it’s doing its job and not creating new problems.Practical notes:You’ll need an air pump (and airline tubing/check valve as usual). This is not a self-powered miracle.Great for shrimp/fry/nano setups where you want gentle flow.Easy maintenance: squeeze/rinse it in tank water when needed, keep moving. If you’re building a small tank and want safe filtration that won’t terrorize delicate inhabitants, this is a solid buy.Bob The Magical Talking Turtle approves. She also wants me to tell you that she considers sponge filters to be “the Ragged Cotton Socks of aquarium gear”—not glamorous, not flashy, but ancient, reliable, and somehow always the thing that saves the day.

Helps to keep your fish happy and water crystal clean
This really does a good job filtering the fishtank. How do I know? Because the water looks crystal clear and the fish look happy. This was super easy to assemble and I can put all kinds of substrates in it. You just have to connect your own airline for it to function. It’s the perfect size for any size tank. It really seems noiseless. If you put enough weight in it, it will stick to the bottom. If I had room, I would put in another.

It works, buuuuuut…..
First came cracked and had to use some suction cups to keep it down to make the bubbles come out the top with the second. Funny enough, the cracked one worked better… And I surmised this was why:How a sponge filter typically works is to create a negative suction with the air moving up to pull the water into the sponge for filtering. For this, the only opening for the water is at the top. When I had a crack, it also had the usual sponge opening of at the side. I am debating if there is a safe way to make holes… But here is another thing. They have it ordered floss, then fine filter, then course filter, then media… Because the water only comes in the top, at the floss, it is going to the floss first when that should be the LAST filter it goes through. That being said, when I tried to reverse the order, I seemed to have an even harder time keeping the thing down. I may try again at another time. So, why do I give it a four? Because, it does work, is cheap, they sent me a replacement fast, and has a media compartment like I needed for water softening media. It works well in a small tank, and is easy to use. I just feel like it has some improvements that could be made like having the vents nearer the bottom of the filter so that the water isn’t going through the floss first.Edit: After replacement of all the parts in the sponge, it is staying on the gravel. Seems a broken, sinking neck piece was causing the issue. I also have decided to go without the little spout ontop. Somehow, it’s a bit quieter that way, more similar to a sponge filter but the bubbles are still on the larger side.. I would assume that the people who want it to have a longer neck like a regular sponge filter would be able to use a small piece of pvc pipe to create a taller neck. Was also able to reverse the sponges and hope this will decrease the issue of the floss taking on all the filtering work. As was, the other sponges were remaining pristine while the floss was well on its way to becoming prematurely clogged up.

Good Small Filter
The filter is small, but it works really well. I’m using it in a 5-gallon tank and it tucks perfectly into the corner. The low flow is gentle and still keeps the water clean.

Simple, affordable and it works!
I’m just coming back to buy a second filter and realized I bought my first 4 years ago. This little filter is really simple but very effective. No parts to replace, easy to clean. It’s the best combo of ceramic media and sponges.

Good for DIY filter
This is better described as a pump powered internal filter. Make sure to flip the sponge order so you have coarse grit on top, then fine sponge, then white polishing pad.Theres a lot of ways to customize the filter. The biofilter can be replaced with matrix but i just left it. The polishing pad can be replaced with purigen or a pantyhose stuffed with peat to lower ph.I also replaced the funnel with a 1/2 inch wide reusable boba straw. The straw was cut at an angle to fit at my desired height. the angled cut is recommended to prevent clogging. This allows the output to sit above the water line This mostly eliminates the bubbling noise also creates flow. My tetras love it.The filter was just OK out the package, but with my additions I love it.
