Additional concerns

Feeding percentages
A bird’s daily diet should be 75-80% Harrison’s Bird Foods, 15-20% organic dark green leafy or dark yellow meaty vegetables and fruits (including sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango or papaya) and 5% omega-rich seeds and nuts (flax, chia, perilla, or JUMPSTART Omega).
Do not offer vitamins unless directed by your avian veterinarian. Do not use other formulated diets in conjunction with Harrison’s or you could reduce the benefits.

Exercise
Recent research has shown that a lack of exercise is a primary factor in the development of diseases, especially atherosclerosis. This appears to be a condition that is present in all captive parrots to some degree and worsens with age.
There are a few ways a family can ensure that a pet bird has access to exercise:
• Free-flying would be the ultimate exercise, but there are potential associated risks, such as escape or encountering household dangers
• Housing in a large enough enclosure to allow free flight
• Placing a harness or leash on the bird and have it tethered to an outdoor line under constant observation
• Placing a ladder inside the enclosure to encourage movement
• Providing safe environmental enrichment activities
• Offering daily time for the bird to move around outside the enclosure with supervision

Sunlight
Access to sunlight is essential for activation of vitamin D and utilization of calcium in the body. For example, African grey parrots, whose natural living conditions are high in the jungle canopy, require an abundance of sunlight in captivity to activate dietary calcium.
There are several ways access to sunlight can be accomplished for pet birds:
• One may expose the bird in its cage or other safe enclosure to outdoor fresh air and direct sunlight for short periods of time. There should be shade available for the bird to retreat.
• Putting a cage in front of a sunny window does not accomplish the same thing. The glass itself prevents transfer of the proper rays.
• In areas or seasons where there is little direct sun, recommended lamps with sufficient UVA and UVB lights may be used to simulate sun rays.

Probably helped save my budgie’s life!!
UPDATE: If you select the 5lb. bag in Super Fine size, you’ll actually receive the larger Fine size. The image shows the Fine, but the size selection says Super Fine. There doesn’t appear to be a way to order Super Fine in a more economical 5lb. bag (and it turns out that the company doesn’t even offer it!), and I’m really annoyed at not having the food for my birds that I expected to have. One of my six budgies (aka parakeets) was recently sick with a fungal infection for over a month, which causes a lot of weight loss. Although I hadn’t had much luck with offering my flock trial amounts now and then of friends’ Harrisons’ pellets in the Adult Lifetime Fine variety, I figured it was worth the expense to try to get my sick guy to eat some of the High Potency blend, with the extra calories and nutrition, as it could be a factor in his ability to survive the illness and treatment, and I was willing to try just about anything. I got this extra-small pellet size because it’s close to the size of millet grains, and started by mixing a little in with the crushed Nutri-berries and with the fruity Zupreem pellets (x-small) he was already eating a bit of, but he didn’t seem to be going for it. After a few days I started offering the Harrison’s in its own dish alongside the others, and before I knew it, he was frequently choosing it over even his favorite Nutri-berries! So I switched fully to the Harrison’s for his pellets and removed the Zupreem at that point. Now, he’s fully recovered, and I’m so thrilled! I hadn’t had much hope my sweet little guy would make it, and I strongly suspect that these pellets, along with a very warm, clean environment and lots of rest, were instrumental. Several of the other birds have eaten some of the Harrison’s too now after seeing him enjoy it. Woohoo! I’ve just ordered the 5-lb. bag, and plan to do the 6-month regimen with the whole flock, after which I can hopefully transition them to the Adult Lifetime blend. This brand is on the expensive side, but the quality of the organic ingredients and the reduction of waste makes it worth the cost, and probably even less expensive than a cheaper diet in the long term when you factor in vet bills! If your birds won’t eat it, try a smaller size; try mixing it with their favorite foods; try leaving a dish of it in the cage in their favorite spot at all times, and only offering their other food for a shorter time morning and evening. I think once you get them to try it, they realize it’s good and want to eat it.

Our Birds’ Favorite for 8 Years – Please Fix the Size Listing
My husband and I have ordered Harrison’s High Potency “FINE” 5 lb on Amazon at least 10 times over the past eight years. Our birds absolutely love it! It’s also the healthiest and best food we’ve been able to find for them.Recently, it’s been very difficult to find. Our vet stopped carrying it, and we haven’t been able to find it in any local stores, so we’re really grateful that it’s available on Amazon. We always try to keep some in stock so we never run out, and Amazon makes that very convenient. Our birds are very picky and get nervous about trying anything new. They prefer the Fine size, but it’s been listed as out of stock for a while. The last two times I ordered Super Fine instead, but the Fine size actually arrived both times. It was a pleasant surprise for us, but it could potentially be confusing or problematic for other customers. We would really appreciate it if the product information could be updated so customers know exactly which size is currently available and what they will receive. Thank you!

Harrison’s is the BEST bird food (IMHO)
My dove has always had this food. I have to order it quite a bit earlier than when I estimate I will run out as it usually takes quite a bit of time to arrive (even when it says it will be here next week, the delivery date will always be delayed). However, the food is fresh and my bird is healthy and the price is competitive with a local vet whose stock is always hit or miss.

My birds liked it from the very first day
My two budgies started eating these pellets as soon as gave it to them. I regularly feed them the highest quality seed mix I can afford, supplemented with fresh veggies, sweet potato, organic pumpkin seeds, hemp hearts, millet, and super grains like red and white quinoa. I trust this brand as being high quality and I wanted to add these pellets to try to help with loose poop issues in one of my birds. I didn’t expect my little boys to go for the unfamiliar texture and taste, but they surprised me! I’m so happy they like this healthy new food! Between these pellets and some pre and probiotics I’ve just added, the little poopy bird is already improving. Thank you!
