Soft, lightly scented, and genuinely pleasant to look at.
These white poplar shavings are surprisingly soft. I haven’t opened the bag yet because I’m still setting up, but even through the packaging there wasn’t a single sharp or stiff piece poking out. The whole thing has enough give that I could honestly imagine using it as a pillow… which I did not expect from wood shavings. The pieces are nice and thick- which is what I’d expect from shavings rather than sawdust, but still thicker and softer than I thought they’d be.The smell is very light. Not unscented, but just a mild, clean wood scent, which is pleasant. The light scent is probably a good thing for chicks or birds in general, since the scent won’t overwhelm them. The color is surprisingly attractive too- I didn’t think I’d ever call wood shavings “attractive”, but here we are.Quality-wise, they seem great so far. Soft, thick, and consistent. I cannot speak to how durable the shavings are, since I haven’t used them yet. However, based on the feel- I’m confident they’ll make a comfortable surface and soak up moisture the way they’re supposed to.They are kind of pricey at the time I write this review, but overall I think they are a good product- especially considering how soft they are and how clean they look and smell.Overall, I was mostly just surprised by how nice these are. Soft, lightly scented, and genuinely pleasant to look at. I’m looking forward to using them once I am ready.

The best bedding I’ve found but too pricey for me.
We have two young silkie chicks in a brooder in our home this winter until they are big enough to join the adult silkie flock outside. One thing that you will quickly learn if your brooder is inside is that it can make your home dusty no matter how clean you keep your brooder and not much lasts long before you begin to smell whatever bedding you use. So when I saw this 1lb bag of ultra absorbant odor control wood shavings I thought I needed to give it a try. The white poplar wood shavings are noticeably softer and whiter than standard wood shavings. This I automatically liked right away. The flakes have a neutral scent and I did not notice any dust from using them at all. Usually just adding flakes to my brooder I see a little cloud of dust but nothing at all with this bedding. The absorbency seems really good and the flakes also seem to dry fast. I would scoop flakes out of our chicks water and leave in their brooder. These wet flakes always dried quickly. I really felt that the brooder took about 4 more days then normal to have any odor and need changing. So for this reason and the lack of dust I really loved using this product. The only reason I can not give it the 5th star is that the bags, 1lb or 2 lbs, are small. 1lb was good for one use. The 2lb bag is a bit of a better deal. I would be more likely to re-order this if it was more affordable and came in larger bags. Overall, the bedding appears to be better then most when it comes to dust, dryness, texture, softness and odor so I really wish I could afford to use only this one from now on.

Clean and Soft
I know some folks will say this is pricey, and compared to other tree species shavings, it is, but it’s also superior in several ways.White poplar has a low phenol content which is preferable for newly hatched chicks. Pine is great when they get a bit older, but the white poplar is softer for their new feet, is more absorbent, has a lower dust kick-up, and is just overall gentler for the first few weeks of their lives. This one-pound package is enough for the contained area and I did not notice any unpleasant scent. There were no odd inclusions or any thick shavings, it creates a soft, fluffy surface, the ideal environment for the tiny peeps.

large poplar wood chips keep chicken brooder clean and fresh, but the larger bag is a better value.L
This chicken coop bedding for small chicks performs exactly as advertised. The flakes are noticeably softer than standard wood shavings, which is especially important when you’re dealing with young chicks that need a gentle, comfortable surface during their first few weeks of life. The bedding is made from white Poplar wood, and it has a very mild, almost neutral scent. Low odor is a big plus in a brooder set up, particularly if you’re keeping chicks in a garage, barn, or enclosed space where airflow may be limited. The larger flake size also helps reduce dust compared to finer shavings, which can be better for both chicks respiratory health and overall cleanliness. Absorbency seems well thought out, the flakes are substantial enough to soak up moisture effectively while still allowing for easy spot cleaning. This should help keep the brooder dryer and reduce the risk of damp conditions that can lead to health issues. One thing to note is the bag size. The smaller 1 pound bag is convenient, but the 2 pound bag option offers much better value per pound. If you’re raising more than a handful of chicks or planning to refresh bedding frequently, it makes more financial sense to go with a larger bag. Overall, the bedding appears to be safe, practical, and chick friendly. I’m looking forward to using it in my brooder and expect it to hold up well.
