    Worth it.
My wife’s review:I ordered the ACANA Grain Free dry dog food to try as I do a mix for our dog of both grain and grain free kibble but I don’t like to add any extra unknown fillers. This bag is 60/40 split of “quality animal ingredients and fruits, vegetables and nutrients.”The list of ingredients is very long: Beef, pork, beef meal, whole red lentils, whole pinto beans, whole green peas, pork meal, beef fat, whole green lentils, whole chickpeas, whole yellow peas, lamb, fish oil, lentil fiber, natural pork flavor, pea starch, beef tripe, beef liver, beef kidney, pork liver, pork kidney, salt, vitamin E supplement, dried kelp, whole pumpkin, zinc proteinate, collard greens, whole apples, whole pears, mixed tocopherols (preservative), taurine, calcium pantothenate, freeze-dried beef, freeze-dried pork, freeze-dried lamb, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, dried chicory root, turmeric, sarsaparilla root, althea root, rose hips, juniper berries, citric acid (preservative), rosemary extract, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Bifidobacterium animalis fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product.Phew! To be honest, even I stopped reading it after the first fifteen items and said, “okay, we’re good to try this out.” :)Unlike most Labs, our dog is not kibble motivated. Treats are another matter, of course – no problem there. So getting her to eat good kibble is important and not just a steady diet of treats. When the food arrived, I mixed it into our Lab’s normal dry dog food and gradually increased the percentage of it in the mix. She had no digestive issues (firm stools and no gas) and seemed to like the taste of the new kibble. She’s been eating a 50/50 blend of the food now for about a month and we’ve not seen any adverse reaction. She still seems to enjoy the taste and will eat right away when the food bowl is filled. That’s a win for us.I know this seems a little spendy but it’s worth it if it keeps her eating kibble instead of treats.

Higher-protein, quality kibble of beef, pork and lamb
I found this grain-free red meat recipe from Acana to be good quality for my shiba inu, but I do find it to be a little too legume-/pea-heavy, with red lentils, pinto beans and green peas pretty high up on the ingredient list. I also think the protein at 29% is a little high for my dog’s current needs, but I like how there’s no cheap fillers in this and uses organ meat as well. It also includes glucosamine and DHA/EPA, though not too high. The 32-pound bag is certainly large enough to last about half a year for my dog, and while the price seems a little steep, I think it’s reasonable for the new larger size and for the higher-quality kibble. The expiration date on the bag I received is also long, expiring in January 2027 (received in August 2025).The actual kibble size is on the larger side, but my medium-size boy didn’t have problems chewing it. He did have a slight upset stomach initially, as he does have some food sensitivity to both pork and lamb, so I’ve only been giving this as a small portion of his normal dry food meal to mix in different flavors because he does like the red meat flavor so far. Acana has a freshwater fish blend, too, that might be better suited for his sensitive stomach and plan to try that next instead.

So good, the dog helped herself!
My dog wanted to review this one personally, so I decided to let her! Here goes:This giant bag of food came in the mail, and it was heavy so Mom left it on the living room floor by the door. I knew this wouldn’t do, as we’re Amazon Vine reviewers, so things need to be reviewed quickly! Also, the smell (even through the bag) was tantalizing, so I decided to assist with the process by quickly chewing a hole in the bag so I could appropriately review the food inside. Here are my findings: The bag itself says “red meat,” and I love red meat, so I was ready to dig right in! The bag doesn’t actually taste like red meat, but it wasn’t bad. As bags go, it was one of the better ones I’ve eaten. Once I chewed a nice, mouth-sized hole in the bag, the aroma of the actual food came through clear and true — it smells very yummy! The pieces are small and round — big enough to chew, but not so heavy that they make a lot of noise if you decide to scatter a few around the living room for your dog sister (cleverly distracting her so I could focus on enjoying the whole bag!). These are small enough that they might even work for my small dog cousins, in case I wanted to share.Pork and beef are the top two ingredients, and I love both of those! More things should have pork and beef in them! I’m told the ingredients overall are good quality and nutritionally balanced, but I’m mostly in it for the meat. I like that there’s lots of meat! Mommy said the company that owned it sold it to another company, but she’s still happy with the ingredients even though it’s a different company. I don’t really understand about all this company stuff, because it’s in my house and in my mouth so clearly *I* own it. But, whatever.I did not get an upset stomach, even though Mommy says that by helping myself, I did not follow “proper food change protocol.” We both agree that that’s a plus, since upset tummies are no fun!Mommy thought it was a little expensive, but I told her that HER meat is expensive, too, and I’m definitely worth it! So I’m giving it five stars.
